Commerce grad stays on the edge of innovation

Jeff Dornan

Jeff Dornan | Class of 2009
Bachelor of Commerce

Jeff is a born entrepreneur. "I strongly believe in entrepreneurship and empowering youth to start their own businesses,” he says.

He lives by his own words. Following graduation Jeff started, along with his father and brother, 3D Business Solutions. This sales agency sells home improvement products to retailers such as Home Depot, Lowe's, Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Costco and Walmart. Sales surpassed $10 million in 2013.

Creative freedom drew Jeff to the sales and marketing field. “I love applying new technology to our business to stay on the edge of innovation," he says. “For example, we do our own in-house computer renderings of store displays to help sell retailers on a new product or concept.”

It was the technology and “laptop-based culture” that prompted Jeff to study at UOIT.  He also liked that the university was brand new and had state-of-the-art facilities for students. His best learning experience while attending UOIT was the Capstone Study Project in his final year. "We had to consult with an organic frozen baby food company, which led to real world experiences of having to deal with different students' needs and client challenges."

Not content to rest on current successes, in 2014 Jeff and his brother also launched a brewery. Underdog's Brewhouse is Oshawa's first hometown craft beer producer. “We want to be a large contributor in the craft beer movement,” says Jeff, “and are building a 'Better Beer Revolution' campaign to raise awareness.” They founded the company based on the philosophy "that a true underdog can overcome any challenge put before them, no matter the size or complexity." We're betting on Jeff.
